A short, beautiful hike up a steaming valley above Hveragerði leads to a warm river you simply lie down in, choosing your temperature by moving up or down the stream. One of the most rewarding easy adventures near the capital.

What to expect

Roughly a 3 km walk each way over gentle hills, then boardwalks and changing screens at the river. Free and wonderfully wild, bring layers for the breezy valley.

Getting there

Drive to Hveragerði (about 45 minutes from Reykjavík), then hike from the trailhead car park.

Best time to visit

Summer and early autumn for the easiest, driest trail; allow about three hours return.
