Warm water is one of the easiest joys to share with children in Iceland, and the country is set up for it. Public pools and many lagoons welcome families warmly, with shallow areas, comfortable temperatures and a relaxed atmosphere. Here are the gentlest places to soak together and how to keep the day smooth.
Start with the public pools
Every Icelandic town has a geothermal swimming pool, and these are the most family friendly option of all: warm, affordable and full of local families. Many have shallow childrens areas, gentle slides and a row of hot pots at different temperatures. Reykjavik's large Laugardalslaug is a favourite, with plenty of space for younger swimmers.
Relaxed lagoons that suit children
Among the bigger baths, Secret Lagoon at Flúðir is calm and easy, with little geysers bubbling nearby to keep curious eyes busy. Vök Baths in the east is sleek but unhurried, with shallow floating pools and a lake to paddle in. Forest Lagoon near Akureyri is gentle and sheltered among the trees. Some premium lagoons set a minimum age, so check before you plan.
Keeping the day easy
- Bring a familiar routine. Snacks, a warm towel and a change of clothes make the cool down afterwards comfortable.
- Shower together first, this is expected everywhere and helps small children feel at ease.
- Watch the temperature. Children warm up faster than adults, so keep sessions short and offer water.
- Let them set the pace. A relaxed hour beats a long visit, and the calm is the point.
Children take to Icelandic bathing instantly, warm water and a little adventure are a happy mix.
